Maps & Navigation

With 85,000 acres of open desert and cell coverage that disappears the moment you leave Highway 78, proper navigation isn't optional—it's essential. The good news: free maps are available at the Discovery Center, and several excellent GPS apps work offline after you download the area in advance.

Free Official Park Map

California State Parks provides a free, printable PDF map of Ocotillo Wells SVRA that shows all major trails, camping areas, facilities, and restricted zones. Pick one up at the Discovery Center or download the official PDF map here before your trip. The paper version fits in a jersey pocket and doesn't need batteries.

Pro Tip

Download your GPS maps and save waypoints before you leave home. Cell service is unreliable throughout the park, and you don't want to be searching for Shell Reef without a signal.

Recommended GPS Apps

Two apps stand out for Ocotillo Wells navigation. Both offer offline capability, which is critical for desert riding where cell towers are distant memories.

OnX Offroad

Before You Go

Pre-Trip Checklist

Ocotillo Wells is remote by design. There are no gas stations, grocery stores, or cell towers inside the 85,000-acre SVRA. Come prepared, or come prepared to leave early. Here's what to handle before you arrive.

Fuel & Supplies

  • Fill fuel tanks in Borrego Springs or Salton City
  • Bring extra fuel if planning multi-day riding
  • Stock up on food, ice, and drinks before arriving
  • Pack at least 1 gallon of water per person per day

Navigation & Communication

  • Download offline maps (OnX, Gaia) before leaving home
  • Save GPS waypoints for camp and key destinations
  • Bring a paper map as backup
  • Consider satellite communicator for backcountry

Vehicle Prep

  • Check OHV registration (green/red sticker or street-legal plate)
  • Verify tire pressure and spare tire condition
  • Pack basic tools and spare parts
  • Bring tow strap and jumper cables

The Golden Rule

If you need it, bring it. The desert doesn't have a convenience store. The nearest gas pump is 17 miles away. The nearest hospital is 30 miles away. This isn't a problem—it's the whole point of getting away from it all. Just plan accordingly.
